What Nanka Does
FOR ATHLETES
- Monthly practices for elite seniors to train together,
- Clinics four to six times each year with renowned coaches and athletes from Nanka and the nation,
- Monthly training practices for elite juniors that teach techniques and allow them to work on-on-one with Nanka coaches.
FOR COACHES
- Sponsor coach certification workshops at the local through national level.
- Offer workshops for teacher certification. Programs are provided locally to give coaches the opportunity to work with one another, receive certifications without extra travel and expense, and give an opportunity to learn new drills, exercises and techniques.

NANKA 2005 - ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Nanka members are registered in over 40 judo clubs in southern California. The instructors at these clubs teach over 1,400 children and adults each week, contributing to the physical health and emotional development of all of those participants. Nanka clubs teach discipline, self-respect and the self-esteem that comes from accomplishing a difficult task through hard work.
All Nanka clubs contribute to southern California judo. In addition to their judo training, most teach a strong ethic of community service that includes helping Nanka host tournaments, loading mats on trucks to deliver and set up for the tournament, refereeing, serving as technical officials keeping score or timing, selling refreshments to raise funds for athletes’ travel and a thousand chores small and large.
Nanka distributes over $20,000 each year to athlete development activities, supporting athletes who compete at all levels from regional competition in Pennsylvania and Colorado to the world championships.
Nanka hosts regional practices for both children and adults that are attended by over 300 participants each year.
Nanka tournaments provide competition opportunities several times a year for 200 – 400 competitors at each event.
Two U.S. Open Gold Medalists

Two members of the team representing the U.S. in the World Championships
One gold medal and silver and bronze medals too numerous to count in the Panamerican Masters
Four members of the Juvenile Panamerican team who returned with one gold and two bronze medals
Both male and female team champions at the USJF Junior Nationals – a repeat of our 2004 performance!
Swept the United States Judo Federation awards for outstanding achievement….
The USJF Male athlete coach of the year, USJF Female Athlete coach of the year, USJF juvenile female player of the year, USJF senior male player of the year and USJF senior female player of the year all came from Nanka!
