Chase Oishi - 2009 Nanka Funding
Dear Nanka,

Thank you for all the funding for my national tournaments in 2009. I was glad to go and compete in all these tournaments and it was a good experience. I did very well at the USJF junior nationals in San Francisco. I took first place in my division, 3 kata gold medals, was able to compete in the team tournament and get third. I also received the male fighting spirit award. I am very fortunate to receive funding support to go to these tournaments. I will always try my best and work hard for the up coming tournaments in 2010. I am very proud to be part of Nanka.   Sincerely, Chase Oishi - Gardena Judo Club (Received Feb 3, 2010)

Kyle Taketa - 2009 Junior Worlds
The Junior World Championships in Paris, France was by far the most amazing tournament I have ever been too. There were so many countries I have never seen before and some of the best athletes around the world. Japan led the medal tables by placing 1st in almost every weight. The crowds were crazy and it felts like the Olympics.

I went into the tournament very nervous but excited at the same time. Just making the team was very hard and a lot of stress. Going into the tournament was crazy. I was the second match of the day and had to walk out in front of the world. I was brought onto the ground level and was escorted with my coach down the walkway with my opponent. My first match was against the Georgian. I did some scouting the night before and found that he was the cadet world silver medalist a few years before. I knew it was going to be a tough match, but my goal was to fight hard and have fun, knowing I had nothing to lose. The match ended up in golden score where I won by decision. When I walked off the mat I couldn't’t believe it. I felt so accomplished just by winning a match there. My expectations were’t very high going into the tournament because it was my first time at a new weight and being one of the youngest in my division.
My next match was against the Dominican Republic. Their country was in the same union as the United States but I had never faced this player before. With another hard 4 minute fight, I ended up in golden score again. But this time I barely won with a shido to end the match. I was a little upset and disappointed because I knew I could have done better. But that put me into the next round against the Israeli, who beat the French earlier in the day who was ranked 8th in Europe and took 3rd in the European Championships. I knew this was going to be a tough match. Going into the match I felt ready, but for some reason I couldn’t play my game. With about a few minutes in, I was thrown with Uchimata for a yuko and then pinned. Getting off the mat I was even more upset because I knew I could have done slightly better. The Israeli went on to take 5th falling one match short of the bronze medal. I was ok with my loss because I got to figure out where I stand in the world and I tried my hardest. After watching the finals and with the new rules in effect, the Judo was so much cleaner. There were more ippons and pretty throws. Watching all of the top athletes made Judo even more inspiring for me and makes me not want to miss out on next years Junior Worlds. Another year from now I feel if I set my mind to it, I can do a whole lot better and have a chance to medal. It was an awesome experience that I will never forget.

After the long 4 days of competition, I was able to go sight seeing the last day with the team and even before the tournament with family. The country of France was very different and nice unlike anything I’ve ever seen. So many of the buildings and monuments I’ve seen in movies were right in front of my eyes. I recommend Paris a place to go visit and see. Over all I am very grateful I got to have this experience I look forward to training hard to make next years team again.

David Honda - 2009 Nanka Funding
Dear Nanka Development

Thank you, for the funding in 2009.  I think this is one of my best judo competition years I’ve had in a long time.  I’ve grown and learned a lot this year and hope to become the best 55kg.in the group for 2010.  April of 2010, I will turn 16 and the top of my age category (Juv B).  I feel good about the 2010 season and hope to finish at the top.

Sincerely,  David Honda - SouthBay Judo (Received Nanka Office, Dec 18, 2009)

Myles Honda - 2009 Nanka Funding to Sensei, CJI, Jr Nationals, Jr Open and Jr Olympics
Dear Nanka Development,

Thank you for all your funding and help to go to tournaments like the Sensei Memorial, CJI State Championships, Junior Nationals, Junior Open, and Junior Olympics in 2009.

My experience was great! I got to fight some of my old friends.  It also allows a greater point of view on possible upcoming opponents. You can also go there just to have fun and learn, like I did – meet up with friends, and check out pools and weight brackets. I was hurt so I couldn’t fight at the Junior Open and Junior Olympics.
Thanks again for the support, Myles Honda - SouthBay Judo Club  (Received Nanka Office - Dec 11, 2009)

Kimberly Balough - 2009 US Open
Dear Nanka Development,

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the generous support I received from Nanka’s development program to compete in the 2009 Senior U.S. Open Championships. This was the first time I was able to compete at the U.S. Open. The experience I gained from the level of competition present at the tournament is considerable and will better me for future competitions.

The support I received through the variety of training opportunities and outstanding coaching made available to help prepare for this competition was outstanding. This combined with the financial support is what made it possible for me to compete.  Nanka’s Judo program is a nationally recognized as a well revered program composed of great instructors, coaches, students, and athletes of which I am proud to be a part of.  Thank you again for your support.
Sincerely, Kimberly Balogh - Gardena Judo Club  (Received Nanka Office - Dec 3, 2009)
