Development Annoucement RE: Nanka Funding Guidelines (Via Nanka Email Sept 13, 2009)
Nanka needs your support. A big part of Judo is to give back. Attention to those interested in qualifying for any Nanka funded development programs. To qualify you (your parent/guardian if not mature enough to help, which will be determined by development committee) must participate actively in Nanka sponsored tournaments (Nanka Jr.-Sr. Fall Judo Tournament, Nanka Team tournament, Nanka Novice Tournament, Speed Harada Tournament). This just one of the criteria for qualification for any funding. You may get credit for scoring, refereeing, pooling runners, etc. All judokas 3 kyu brown belt and up are required to referee. For this Sunday's Nanka Jr.-Sr. Fall Judo Tournament you can check in and check out in what capacity your are volunteering with Rob Oishi at the medic table. Thank you for your support in advance. USJA-USJF Grassroots Judo Program The leaders of Grassroots Judo™ are the President and COO of the USJA and the President and Executive Director of the USJF. Our aim is to grow Judo and enable people to contribute to society. We are the organizations of choice for coaches and students to train in the fundamentals of “big” Judo. [Judo spelled with a big “J” means the holistic contribution of Judo to society. Judo spelled with a little “j” is the sport and recreational (technical) aspects of judo]. We hope to facilitate a way for the most skilled and talented instructors, competitors, coaches, and referees in the country to give back to judo through the USJA and USJF (Posted June 12, 2009)
The Little Tokyo Recreation Center is now the Budokan of Los Angeles! As the capital campaign enters high gear and the dream of a sports complex in Little Tokyo begins to materialize, we have a very important announcement to make. The Little Tokyo Recreation Center project is now the Budokan of Los Angeles (BoLA). “Budokan” roughly translates to “martial arts hall” in Japanese. Despite the literal translation, the word “budokan” has held a mostly ambiguous definition, especially in Japan. The world-famous Nippon Budokan in Tokyo was constructed specifically for Judo competition in the 1964 Summer Olympics and other high-level martial arts events. Today, however, it is best known as a world-class concert venue and multi-purpose sports arena. As the Western counterpart to the Budokan of the East, the BoLA will provide a premier venue for karate, kendo, judo, and other martial arts. The BoLA is also capable of housing four adjacent basketball or volleyball courts for large-scale tournaments, leagues, or practices. Meeting rooms and open space (including a rooftop terrace) can also accommodate community events and social service programs. Most importantly, the term “Budokan” establishes a cultural identity for the facility, evoking the spirit of Little Tokyo and its rich history as a part of the Los Angeles community. For more than a century, Little Tokyo has endured constant change, yet has continued to thrive in downtown Los Angeles. As one of only three remaining historic Japantowns in the United States, preservation of Japanese American culture remains a paramount concern for many in the community. The BoLA will ensure a cultural presence in Los Angeles, advancing a decorated legacy of sports in the Japanese American community. The brand new Budokan of Los Angeles website has launched! Check the site for updates, upcoming events, San Tai San information, and more! Go to www.budokanofla.org for update. Email from reccenter@lists.ltsc.org. (Posted April 29, 2009)
